This week is the 1st anniversary of the first ever workshop for Medway Youth Trust's International Social Action programme New Horizons…….. and so it felt very fitting that it was a particularly important workshop for the 13 young people involved in New Horizons 2016.
The group had been told in advance that there was a big announcement at this session and there was nervous excitement in anticipation of the news. So far this New Horizons group have achieved so much; they have grown into a team and they are a group that Medway Youth Trust can be proud of.
Up until this point they have been focusing on a fundraising goal of £13,000 in order to cover their flights, accommodation and food for their three week project in Moldova this October. However at this week’s session MYT were able to announce the unbelievable news that New Horizons have been approved for an Erasmus+ funding award which will cover the participation costs for 15 young people from Medway to deliver their New Horizons project this year.
This puts us in the amazingly fortunate position where all of the money we raise from fundraising between now and our departure date in October will go directly to benefitting the charities and community we will be working with in Moldova.
The group are really motivated to put together social and academic skills workshops and physical educational sessions to share their knowledge and abilities with the people they will be working with in Moldova. They immediately set themselves a new fundraising target of £3,000 to put towards materials to bring with them or to buy in Moldova to help carry out their social action plans.
As a group we discussed at length the local organisations and schools we will potentially partner with in Chisinau, including working at a day center for vulnerable children and young people and an organisation that supports adults with mental and physical disabilities. I am in no doubt that considering the maturity, enthusiasm and positivity in this group the New Horizons 2016 team will be a force to be reckoned with.
