It really has been a couple of the most outstanding weeks since the programme began and there are definitely a few shout outs to our supporters worth a mention!
These two weeks of prosperity started in earnest on Saturday 8th August when 10 of our participants donned their New Horizons t-shirts and took themselves off up to 'the big ASDA' in Chatham to do some bag packing in return for some cash towards the team target!
The team raised £331.31 and left the store in very high spirits having told almost everyone they met about their up and coming adventures in Colombia. Off the back of this success the MYT office appeared to go into fundraising overdrive with NCS teams jumping at opportunities to kick start their fundraising campaigns for their fantastic social action projects across Medway, and fundraising fever had MYT staff themselves signing up to do all sorts of challenges to support New Horizons.
The beginning of the week then brought the outstanding News that Chatham Maritime Trust will be supporting the New Horizons team to the tune of £3,000. This incredible boost has brought the whole programme to life and has spurred us on to keep working harder and smarter to achieve our goal! During the following week over half of the cohort came in to have one to one meetings to catch up with their individual progress on the programme in general and also to discuss their plans of how they will go about hitting their £300-£500 individual targets. In these one to ones the participants were positive and had plenty of ideas-leaving MYT with to-do lists and deadlines and tasks a plenty.
As mentioned earlier fundraising fever had swept through the MYT staff –we now have 3 staff members plus friends signed up for the Dartford Bridge 10k with one former staff member Rosie Smith deciding to do it as a three legged 10 k with her husband to be! Awesome creativity and I hope people are very generous in sponsoring such a feat! Worth a huge shout out too of course in Lesley Conquest who on August 19th stayed silent for a whole 24hours all in aid of New Horizons. Lesley has banked £80 from her sponsored silence already and is confident that she will raise over £200 in total!
Our workshop on Thursday gave an opportunity for the group to meet the newest and final member of the New Horizons staff team –Daniel Sutherland. Dan has been working as an NCS assistant team leader with MYT over the summer and we are delighted to welcome him onto the team.
On Friday Jody Sharp but into action the Great Big Colombian walk which she has been coordinating since the end of the groups UK residential! The team met at Strood Train station bright and early on Friday morning and made an 8 mile walk to Rainham look easy! The day was a warm one but as usual the team had the New Horizons sign and the Colombian flag flying high, with cars beeping their support all along the route! Jody has successfully raised an awesome £80 towards the New Horizons team target by doing the sponsored walk with the team and she has had another few pound promised to her in sponsorship pledges! The New Horizons team also have more sponsorship pledges to be collected, so all in all The Great Big Colombian walk will have generated close to £250.
Lastly (for this blog) The Great Big Colombian BBQ of course deserves it's place on the honours list. The first of its kind to be run for New Horizons and it was such a success I have every confidence that it won’t be the last. Host your own Great Big Colombian BBQ is a social, fundraising idea that will put a little piece of Colombia on the Medway map. If you would like to order your own Colombian BBQ you will receive a pack which has been designed by New Horizons participants with recipes for Colombian food, suggestions for drinks and suggestions for music to play to give your BBQ a Colombian flavour. There are mini Colombian flags for your burgers and balloons in the national colours. The pack also gives other decoration and entertainment ideas and each registered host also receives a fun Colombian quiz (again designed by a New Horizons participant) to their email address where guests can learn a lot about the beautiful country our New Horizons team will be visiting in October. Each guest at a Great Big Colombian BBQ pays £5 and of course it all goes towards the team target! Our Great Big Colombian BBQ was lots of fun and it raised a fantastic £98.71.
Thank you to everyone who came along and if you would like to host your own Colombian BBQ on New Horizons' behalf please email The New Horizons Team leader at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The New Horizons fundraising ball is rolling and it doesn’t look like it will be stopping anytime soon. There are sponsored runs and presentations to some very interesting people in the pipeline along with car washes, quizzes and tag days. Keep checking the MYT website for details of our up and coming raffle and remember – we always appreciate a like, share or retweet on social media!! It’s been a whirlwind couple of weeks and we are enjoying every second of this fantastic journey.
