The session was high energy, the group are really well bonded and the engagement from the team superb (particularly when listening to lots of information from the Team Leaders!).
We started off by saying a huge thank you to everyone who helped to make and sell sandwiches to NCS participants which raised £200 and also celebrated our first major donation of a fantastic £500 from The Medway Sunlight Rotary - we are so grateful for their support!
We then embarked on our first New Horizons debate on the topic of cultural diversity in British society. The quality of argument and public speaking skills displayed were extremely impressive. The speeches helped to draw out some important issues which we then discussed as a group. We are looking forward to exploring more themes about what is means to be an international volunteer and global citizenship in Colombia and future sessions!
The last half of the workshop was spent on our fundraising strategy. Our team total is currently £2,291.85 with more pledges on their way, there’s still a lot of work to do to get us to our £22,400 target! Fortunately, there is lots of activity and events planned over the next couple of months, including; bag packing at Asda, a presentation at the NCS Graduation Day, a sponsored walk on 21st August, Colombian BBQ fundraisers, “Phil the Bag”, a great big Raffle, the Medway Youth Trust Quiz, dress down days and Sheila and Cat from the Medway Youth Trust are amazingly taking on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge and Dartford 10K to support New Horizons.
A particular thank you to all staff at Medway Youth Trust who are really backing the New Horizons programme and are doing a lot behind the scenes to support our fundraising efforts.
If you would like to get involved by donating, taking part in the sponsored walk, buying raffle tickets or even giving us your old clothes then please contact Sheila.Heffernan@themytrust.org.
