I am Sheila Heffernan. I have been the International Youth Development coordinator at Medway Youth Trust for the past 2 years. During this time I have been incredibly lucky to be one of the lead staff members on the 2 New Horizons programmes
in Colombia and Moldova. I have seen each of the young people involved in all of these programmes change in one way or another through their participation. Sometimes the change is small but often the participants have said that being involved in New Horizons has changed their life. In the past two years New Horizons participants have built a footbridge in an isolated rural community and built the first stage of a wooden playground in the centre of a city. They have repaired roofs and painted buildings. They have run arts and crafts workshops and English language sessions in schools and support centres. They have worked on a coffee farm, picked grapes at a vineyard and worked at a local dairy making yogurt and cheese. Our participants have been involved in political debates and workshops to confront stereotypes. They've been interviewed on National television, they were made special guests at a festival and they visited monasteries, churches and waterfalls in beautiful corners of beautiful countries. Throughout all of these activities our New Horizons participants have connected with people they never met before; some of the participants have come back to the UK saying that the experience has changed their life and many more have said that they want to keep working to make positive changes in other peoples lives. The New Horizons programme is an opportunity exclusively for vulnerable young people from the Medway area and the programme would not exist without the kind donations from our incredible supporters.
This June I will be attempting to run a marathon to raise money so that New Horizons can continue to offer such life changing opportunities to young people in Medway. To date I have never ran further that a half marathon so to train and
complete the Marathon in Stockholm on the first weekend in June will be a huge challenge for me.
I am a firm believer that the positive impact New Horizons makes is invaluable. So much so I believe that it is worth running 26.2 miles for. If you would like to support me and support vulnerable young people in Medway by making a donation I would be really, really grateful! Thanks so much.
