Opportunities Fair 2013

Medway recently hosted its second Opportunities Fair for young people aged 13-25 with additional needs together with their parents or carers.  The event was held at the Corn Exchange Rochester on 26th September and brought together a wide range of services.  The aim was to enable easy access to information, advice and guidance about multiple opportunities for young people with additional needs.  The young attendees were able to obtain guidance from a variety of services on   important issues affecting their progression and transition to adult life including Employment advice, Further education courses, Leisure opportunities, healthy living, Housing, careers and financial advice.  Organisations supporting the event included Medway Youth Trust, Family Information Services, Carers Relief, Disabled Sports Development, A’ Class Driving School and the Princes Trust.  Angie Gillett, MYT’s Specialist Targeted Support Adviser who coordinated the event hailed it as a big success.  Around 200 people attended and feedback was very positive.  One parent commented “It is good to see what services may be available to my child”.  Young people also found the event a positive experience with one young person saying “it was a good place to research lots of opportunities under one roof “.  The exhibitors also found the event beneficial with one observing it as “a good place to network with other providers.”
