New Horizons is an international social action programme created and run by Medway Youth Trust which will raise the aspirations and prospects of young people in Medway. Each year, since it began in 2015, the New Horizons programme supports it’s participants through a series of workshops and a 3 night activity residential (U.K) to prepare them to take part in a three week intensive volunteering programme in a developing country. While abroad the group deliver a unique social action project which is designed to not only improve their individual skills but also benefits the local people and community where they are based. In it's first year the New Horizons group lived and worked in rural Colombia where they spent 3 weeks working on a coffee farm and dairy production company and teaching English language in a school. In 2016 the New Horizons team partenered with a local High School and delivered a series of social action projects in the Moldovan capital Chisinau including supporting a day centre for vulnerable children; building the first stages of a playground, painting the building and runing arts and crafts workshops. Also doing gardening and cleaning projects at a local care home and oncology hospital.

Medway Youth Trust are now really excited to be developing our 2017 project. We have successfully recruited a team of 17 young people from the Medway area who will be spending 3 week volunteering in Ghana in West Africa this October!
The Social Action projects they will deliver there will include :
Volunteering in a fishing village called Abrobiano –running educational sessions around healthy habits, sanitation and recycling. The group will also run basic IT sessions with the school children and help the farmers with the harvest.
Volunteering at Play Soccer Ghana- supporting with football sessions and homework clubs and promoting the benefits of staying engaged in education to the wider community.
New Horizons gives the young people involved in the programme the chance to participate in cultural exchange and gain a new international perspective which will build their confidence, enable them to develop critical life skills and empower them to make a positive difference to their life and the lives of others.
New Horizons participants are young people from Medway who; may face a range of barriers and may otherwise not have had such an opportunity. They are proving with their participation, that any vulnerability large or small isn't an obstacle to achieving great things.
The New Horizons team members spend the months leading up to their departure date fundraising the money required to cover the cost of their place on the programme.
