An apprenticeship is a job with training where you can combine working and earning income with learning job skills and gain nationally recognised qualifications. Apprenticeships – How do they work? An apprenticeship could last between 1 and 4 years. There are 3 levels of apprenticeship you can apply for depending on what qualifications and skills you have at present. Intermediate: Level 2 - equivalent to GCSE grades A to C Level Advanced: Level 3 - equivalent to A Levels Higher: Level 4 -equivalent to Foundation Degree Level Entry requirements will vary with different companies and depending on the level of apprenticeship you are applying for but many will ask for some GCSEs at grades A to C and advanced / higher apprenticeships may need A levels Intermediate and advanced apprenticeships are made up of several key parts including: A nationally recognised qualification Functional skills such as Literacy, numeracy and ICT Other professional qualifications if needed by the job What types of job could I do as an apprentice? There are 250 types of Apprenticeships covering over 1200 job roles across the country. These include lots of different types of job from animal care, business and finance, retail, engineering, hospitality, health care, travel and tourism, science and legal – and many others How Much Would I Earn? The minimum wage for apprentices is £2.68 per hour – some pay more than this and others increase wages as skills developed. The average gross weekly wage for an apprentice is £200 but this varies on the type of job and location Where can I Find an Apprenticeship? Most Apprenticeships are advertised on the National Apprenticeships website: www.apprenticeships.org.uk. The website includes lots of information about different types of apprenticeships as well as details about vacancies you can apply for now. Register on the website to search and apply for vacancies. You can look for vacancies by job type as well as location. You can also set up alerts to be emailed when any new vacancies are added for particular types of job that interest you.
