What is it?

A youth programme which runs in summer and autumn to help young people prepare for their futures by developing friendships, learning key transferable skills and an opportunity to give back to their community!

Who's it for?

Young people aged 15-17 in years 11 and 12

What will I be doing?

Meeting your team and understanding NCS with icebreakers and team building games.

Phase 1: Adventure

Starting to work as a team, develop skills and challenging yourself by taking part in various outdoor activities such as high ropes and abseiling. Coach departure times and locations vary between programmes.

Phase 2: Discovery

Meeting local organisations and community members to get inspiration for your social action project. You will also get to complete an Emergency First Aid course. Summer programmes also mean you get to live away from home in university accommodation and practice independent living!

Phase 3: Social Action Planning and Delivery

This is when you start putting your plan into action and fundraise to deliver your social action project!

The following week, you will put your plan into action and be out in the community delivering your social action project. In the past these have ranged from creating sensory gardens for dementia patients, putting on activities for adults with disibilities and learning difficulties, putting on a Love Music, Hate Racism concert to raise awareness for racism and raising money to deliver backpacks to homeless people in the local area.

Phase 4: Celebration and Ongoing Social Action (NCS Extra)

Presenting your project, receiving your well earned certificate and celebrating your achievements! Your NCS journey doesn't stop there, you can continue doing social action and volunteering and once you complete a further 16 hours, you will receive another certificate!

What do I get out of it?

  • Meet different people within your community
  • Understand and respect, diversity and equality of others by contributing to a wider society and life in Britain.
  • 4 weeks’ worth of activities including 2 residentials!
  • Graduates receive a certificate signed by the British Prime minister
  • Looks great on CV’s for apprenticeships, jobs, college and University!
  • UCAS has stated that a young person who has done NCS is 12% more likely to get in university than someone who hasn’t.

What young people say:

Best £50 my Mum ever spent on me
Emmanuel - NCS Graduate

“I went on NCS thinking it would be a fun way to spend my summer, but it ended up being so much more than that! The friends I made and the things I learnt will last for years to come. Wish I could do it again.
