Between 2015 -2017, MY Trust designed and delivered a brand new international social action project called New Horizons. New Horizons successfully supported 38 young people from vulnerable backgrounds in Medway to participate in cultural exchange, broaden their horizons, learn new skills and develop confidence, adaptability and resilience.

Throughout the three years, New Horizons has journeyed to 3 very different corners of the world; Colombia in South America in 2015, Moldova in Eastern Europe in 2016 and Ghana in 2017. The aim of the New Horizons programme is to raise the aspirations and prospects of young people in Medway, give them a new international perspectives which will build their confidence, enable them to develop critical life skills and empower them to make a positive difference to their life and the lives of others.

Each year we prepared the group of young people for their 3 week intensive volunteering programme in a developing country by running a series of weekly workshops and a 3 night activity residential (U.K). While abroad, our groups aimed to deliver a unique social action project which is designed to not only improve their individual skills, but also to benefit the local people and community where they are based.

In it's first year (2015) the New Horizons group lived and worked in rural Colombia where they spent 3 weeks working on a coffee farm and dairy production company and teaching English language in a school. In 2016 the New Horizons team partnered with a local High School and delivered a series of social action projects in the Moldovan capital Chisinau including supporting a day centre for vulnerable children; building the first stages of a playground, painting the building and running arts and crafts workshops. They also completed gardening and cleaning projects at a local care home and oncology hospital. Finally, the 2017 New Horizons group went to Ghana to volunteer in local primary schools in a fishing village and at a local football centre where they ran educational sessions around health and hygiene, social skills, football skills, IT skills and English language etc.

MY Trust believe that there is an immeasurable value of experience to be gained from international volunteering and we are passionate about continuing to facilitate such valuable experiences for young people in the future.

We are excited to be developing more international projects in the future. We will have more information coming soon about how young people can get involved in more of our life changing international projects!
